Stilton Heritage is dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of Stilton village in Cambridgeshire. Our charity collects local knowledge, archives historic documents and promotes the heritage of Stilton and the surrounding area.

The village of Stilton has a remarkable past stretching back over a thousand years. Recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, the settlement was already an established community with several manors and farmland.

Stilton became famous during the coaching age as a stop on the Great North Road, when travellers stayed at historic inns such as The Bell and The Angel. The village later became known worldwide through its association with Stilton cheese, which was sold to travellers passing through the village.

Through talks, exhibitions and research, Stilton Heritage explores topics including:

  • The history of Stilton cheese

  • Norman Cross Prisoner of War Depot

  • Historic pubs and coaching inns

  • Local residents and historic figures

  • Buildings and landmarks of Stilton

Our aim is to create a heritage centre for Stilton, preserving local artefacts and stories for future generations while providing an educational resource for visitors and residents alike.
